Explanation of Eto in English

In Japan, there are JIKKAN and JUNISHI, both calendars imported from China. Combinations of the two are called ETO (the sexagenary cycle) and the ETO of each new year becomes a popular topic of conversation.

- What is JUNISHI?

That is a very difficult question to answer. It dates back to the Yin period in China. It is said that in China under the Yin dynasty JIKKAN (a kind of numeral) and JUNISHI were combined in sixty different ways to show days, months, years, and directions; JUNISHI was used to show time.
Later, different animals were used for the twelve signs of JUNISHI.

Is JIKKAN-JUNISHI still widely used in Japan now?

In present-day Japan we make use of it only to refer to years. But until the EDO period it was widely used to show time and directions.

So the names of animals are used to refer to years in Japan then?

Yes, that's right. For example, 2013 is the year of the snake. In this way, rather than combining with JIKKAN, we Japanese simply use JUNISHI to show the years. Also when people are in their sixtieth year, that year is of the same animal (ETO) as the year of their birth, JIKKAN-JUNISHI comes full circle. This is called KANREKI (literally, the return of the calendar). The custom to celebrate one's KANREKI (sixtieth birthday) is still observed in many parts of Japan.

You can tell a person's age from the animal of the year of his or her birth, can't you?

Yes, asking people in what animal year they were born is, in fact, a roundabout way of asking their age.
